Down Time

Since discovering P90X two years ago, eating healthy and working out has become an everyday occurrence for me.  Not a single day goes by that I don’t try and get my workout in or make sure that I have access to good healthy food.  It has been so long now that I have the same feeling about working out that I do about brushing my teeth every morning when I get up, “If I don’t do it then I feel weird and that something is wrong”.

Even when I travel I make sure to plan a way to stay active and get in my workout as it just “feels too good” and I know all my GooBurner friends are working out with me.  So what do you do when you go away on vacation with the family or friends?  This is where the importance of “down time” comes into play.

The first thing I do is make sure that the first week of our family vacations is one of my recovery weeks.  As I plan to devote my time to spending it with family and friends, it just makes since to take advantage of the time and use it to let my body recovery from all the hard workouts that I love to do.

This is not to say that I go on vacation and just sit on a coach somewhere watching TV and drinking beer, quite the opposite since I have gotten into shape and have so much more energy now.  Just as an example this year we went to Cocoa Beach Florida for vacation.  My wife’s family lives there and so did I back in the late 80s early 90s and it is where I met my wonderful wife.  So we are familiar with the area and know some of the great things the area has to offer.  So along with going to the beach to sun and surf we also took advantage of some of the great things offered in the area.

In the past we might have just set up camp on the beach and just soaked up the sun, but this time we were body surfing, boogie boarding, skim boarding, throwing football, going for walks and runs on the beach to just name a few of the activities.  We stayed in a location right near the beach so we walked and biked everyday to shops, restaurants, and attractions.  All of this is light activity, but it is moving and doing and enjoying your vacation.

The down time not only helps you out physically, but the time with the family helps to keep you strong and enjoy the important things in life.  So make sure that you get out and enjoy the summer and enjoy your “down time” because if you are not enjoying life then you are doing something wrong.
